 Night-time expedition into the architectural world of Munich BAU 2011, the World´s Leading Trade Fair for Architecture, Materials, Systems, presented a new architectural highlight in cooperation with Poing Building Centre: the Long Night of Architecture, on Friday, 21 January 2011. This opportunity to go on a night-time expedition into Munich´s architecture was open both to participants in the trade fair and to any of the inhabitants of Munich who wanted to find out more about their built environment. On a cold winter´s night, you could discover – or rediscover – some interesting and spectacular buildings in and around the city. All free of charge! One thing´s for sure, say the organisers: the architecture on show will leave no-one cold! The first Long Night of Architecture was a great success. According to the organiser, more than 10.000 visitors took part at the night-time event, in order to gain insight in the impressive buildings of Munich. The inhabitants of Munich and the trade fair visitors can look forward again to the Long Night of Architecture at BAU 2013. 'Long Nights' – of museums and music – have been held with great success for some years now in the Bavarian capital. Munich´s Lord Mayor, Christian Ude, was therefore happy to be a patron of this new event. He explains: "It’s a great idea to follow up the Long Nights of the Museums and Music now with the Long Night of Architecture. In this regard, Munich has plenty to offer. You only have to think of sports venues like the Olympic Park or the Allianz Arena, which have practically set a style." The choice of buildings on show in the Long Night of Architecture was also inspired by the slogan of BAU 2011: 'The future of building'. There were three different tours on offer. The 'City Stroll' route comprised selected buildings in the inner city which visitors can explore independently on foot – just drop into any of these buildings to take a look and listen to experts explaining the architecture. The 'Highlights Tour' was a shuttle-bus tour to the most interesting new buildings in the north and west of the city around the 'Mittlerer Ring' ring road. The third and final tour was to Poing Building Centre, past outstanding buildings in the south and east of Munich. Of course the owners or operators of these buildings put on something special for their guests on the 'Long Night': guided tours, lectures, musical entertainment, food and drink. In total there were over 30 buildings on this architectural timetable, among them the truly spectacular (SKYGARDEN, Allianz Arena, BMW Welt, HighLight Towers,) the unique (Ikarus Solar House, Central Bus Station) and the traditional (Café Luitpold, Bayerischer Hof Hotel, the Technical University of Munich), to name just a few. There was even a special tour being put on exclusively for BAU´s English-speaking exhibitors and visitors.  … that was the name of the new meeting point set up for the skilled trades. The Skilled Trades Meeting Point in the East Entrance was intended for all those working in the construction trades. Companies put on presentations in this area include BayWa and HolzLand. On Friday and Saturday, Holzmann Medien organised special lectures for the skilled trades, and Verlagsanstalt Handwerk organised guided tours of the exhibition sections on chemical building products and BAU IT. of the TU Munich. *The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen DGNB presented the latest developments for their certification system for sustainable buildings at the forum - which was designed for buildings that are uniquely eco-friendly, economically efficient and optimized for the user comfort. The Forum MacroArchitecture presented two topics: 'Architecture and Industry in Dialogue' and 'Future research in architecture'  Architecture and Industry in Dialogue In the series 'Architecture and Industry in Dialogue' at the MacroArchitecture Forum in Hall A6 at booth 332, the architectural journal AIT, together with the BDIA (German Association of Interior Designers), presented a range of outstanding projects from the field of interiors and interior design. Each day the lectures and debates focussed on a different theme:
 Future research in architecture For the first time in the MacroArchitecture Forum there was a presentation of the results of interdisciplinary trend and product research for the building industry, in a display entitled 'Future research in architecture'. Organised by the architectural journal DETAIL, the trend board looked at the following themes:
Simultaneous interpretation (German/English) was provided at all the lectures. Attendance at the events in the forum was free of charge. The forum was rounded off with a communication area and café, fitted out with innovative materials from EGGER Holzwerkstoffe.  Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance The Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance presented the two theme days on "Intelligent Planning-Building-Using" on Wednesday, 19 January 2011, and on "Tensile Architecture" (in particular membrane structures) on Friday, 21 January 2011. Renovation and modernisation Focused on the modernisation and maintenance of buildings and the latest grants and financing possibilities "Zukunft Bau" (Future of building) Each day Germany's Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS) presented the latest results of its "Zukunft Bau" research initiative. The main focuses of this applied research are energy-efficiency techniques, including modern use of renewable energy, new materials and technologies, sustainable building, demo- graphic change and planning organisation.
